The other day, I received a comment on whether or not it’s worth it to read One Piece weekly. This person also said that he’d rather read the volumes and watching the anime of said manga. I think, and this goes for all series not just One Piece, that it is worth it to read manga weekly (assuming the series is still ongoing).
I myself do all three (read weekly, get volumes, watch the anime), but I realize that not everyone has time for that. And while some options may not be the best (fansubs and scanlations), there are some legal alternatives for you. Using One Piece as an example; you can sign for Shonen Jump Alpha at shonenjump.viz.com to read weekly and they are only two weeks behind. You can go to your local bookstore and pick up the latest volume release. There is then onepieceofficial.com which has the latest anime episodes as they come out in Japan.
Ok I’m getting off topic. Anyways, I believe it is entirely up to you how you want to follow your favorite series. If you want to participate in discussion whether online or with friends, they are most likely caught up to where they read weekly, and if you read weekly yourself it makes things easier. I find it easier and fun to speculate on things when reading weekly because you don’t know what’s going to happen next. Unfortunately you could possibly be spoiled with volumes due to the cover and what’s on it.
Watching the anime can spoil things to a degree, but not as much as the manga volumes, this is mostly because of the opening animation. Since they use the opening sequence over a large span of episodes, it makes sense to put in things that are covered in those episodes. Although, if the viewer is only watching the anime, they could be spoiled on major plot points, fortunately this does not happen often. The biggest example that comes to mind(using One Piece as an example again) is the opening sequence Hikari E(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5svxuS3L9_s) when they started using this opening, the series was in the Alabasta arc, where future crew member Nico Robin was a villain at the time. In the opening you can clearly see her among the rest of the Straw Hat crew just having a good time, which again would obviously spoil you.
If you are looking to own the entire series, then the best route is getting the volumes, since they look great on any Manga fan’s shelf. There is also the fact that you can pick one up at any time and read it. As stated before I wouldn’t use this as a way to get caught up unless you have no other options, since you could possibly be spoiled and it’s hard to talk with others about the series when you are not caught up yourself.
So to close things out, I say try to do all three if you can (read weekly, watch anime, collect volumes), I find it more fun that way. If you can’t juggle all three then I would say just read the manga weekly if you can. Those were just my thoughts and I’m not telling you to do it a certain way. You should just do whatever you feel most comfortable with, whatever that is. And it should also be the option you can keep up with on a regular basis.
I realize that this post was rather long and if you have read all of this then I want to say thank you. Hopefully I was able to help at least one Anime/Manga fan in terms of following their favorite series. Once again, thank you for reading all the way through and don’t forget to support your favorite series if you want more of it!
